General Information

Thank you for purchasing one of our handmade wooden items. We hope that you enjoy your purchase for many years to come. To ensure that your wooden item stays in good shape, and to preserve your investment, please follow the guidelines listed below.

Characteristics of wooden items

Some wooden items are produced from select wood species that have distinguishing grain patterns, natural voids, burls, spalting, curly medullary rays, crotches, or uncommon characteristics, and some items are produced from plain straight grain stock. All wood requires care and occasional maintenance.

Our sources for wood stock

Dried wood as well as green wood is used throughout our product line, depending on the desired finished form. Some of the dried wood is purchased and some is milled and dried at our shop. Dried wood is typically used to make more stable forms where the wood will retain its shape. The green is sourced locally here in Virginia. This wood is generally used to produce the natural edge, or open style bowls that can handle a little distortion as they dry, adding unique character to each piece.

Care instructions for wooden items

Each wooden item is unique in its form and thickness, and how it will react to different environments. Do not place near direct sources of heat or cooling, and do not place in constant direct sunlight. An area of stable humidity is best for wood as large variables of moisture can change shape of the wood quickly leading to distortion or cracks. Do not put any wooden items in the microwave, dishwasher or standing water, if the wood becomes wet dry it of imediaetly with a soft cloth. Most of the wooden items are sealed with either pure tung oil or pure walnut oil, and finished with a mixture of Beeswax, Carnauba wax, and Citrus oil. This produces an all natural, smooth satin finish that will protect the wood. The oil hardens in the grain sealing it from the environment, and the wax adds top layer of protection. Over time your wood will develop a natural patina, and the color may change slightly, this is normal for natural wood items. For general cleaning wipe the surface as needed with a clean cotton cloth. To remove dirt, the cloth may be dampened, gently removing the dirt, then wiped immediately with a dry cloth. If the finish becomes dull, it can be re-waxed and buffed, as required.

Bowls, vases, hollow forms and artwork specific instructions

In addition to the care instructions listed above, please follow the additional instructions listed in this section. If your bowl has the bark still attached to the rim, please remember that this is a very fragile area. The bark is softer than the wood, and should be handled and used with care. If the bark becomes loose or detached, it can be repaired or removed completely. If removed, the top edge should be finished and waxed.
